George, Losing weight gave me a new lease of life

George

When George, 77, realised that it was becoming a struggle to complete eighteen holes on the golf course, he decided enough was enough - he needed to lose weight to boost his energy levels and improve his health.

At 6'1", George's height worked in his favour in terms of his BMI. His starting weight of 14 stone 3 lbs gave him a BMI of 26 - just in the overweight category, so not a major cause of concern.

But he knew himself that if he didn't do something, his weight would spiral out of control and before he knew it, there'd be no golf at all.

After only 6 months of adapting to a new healthy eating plan with Eat Right, George has lost 1 stone 3 lbs, giving him a new weight of 13 stone along with a healthy new BMI of 24. In addition to his weight loss, George has also lost an amazing 5 inches from his waist, and he doesn't have to buy XXL clothes anymore.

George explains what motivated him to lose weight. "I try to be reasonably active - I do a lot of DIY, play golf three times a week and go caravanning two or three time a year. I've noticed that as I've gotten older my energy levels have declined, and sometimes it's too much effort to do any of these things. I thought I could reverse this somewhat by losing weight. Nearly 14 ½ stone was a lot of weight to carry about."

"There may have been a bit of vanity in it too", George admits. "Men with big stomachs don't look too good."

"I was also getting overtired on the golf course, and seriously thinking of sticking to playing nine holes, and not entering eighteen hole competitions. A lot of my clothes didn't fit because of the extra weight I was carrying. Even tying my shoelaces was an effort."

George's wife played an important part in his success, by cooking his meals for him, but she was delighted to have new recipes to try. "There is very little decision making required because the meal plans are created for you. My wife loved this because she doesn't mind cooking, but she hates thinking of what to cook. All dieting requires self control and willpower but this particular diet plan has been easier than I thought because of the variety and organisation provided."

As a result of following the plan, George admits that his eating and drinking habits have changed slightly. "I now enjoy salads and vegetables and my desserts are always a piece of fruit. My wife says that I now eat smaller portions by choice, and friends have even commented on this when we go out to dinner. So the plan has progressively changed my eating habits. I don't drink as much wine anymore, and rather than drink a lot of cheap wine, I have traded up to more expensive wine, and I enjoy a small amount of that."

George suspects that his new lease of life has left some of his friends envious of his success. "A great many of my family and friends are a little envious. I don't think there are many members of my age group who wouldn't like to lose some weight. The difficulty is that old habits die hard. The big advantage of the Eat Right plan is that it has changed my eating and drinking habits for the better, but it has also taught me that I can still enjoy good food and wine, as I always have."

"I feel great about my weight loss. One major benefit is the increase in energy, and how this has allowed me to me more active everyday. It reminds me of then I was younger and fitter. I am now expecting to go caravanning for as far ahead as I can see, whereas only a year ago I was thinking of giving it up altogether because of the physical demands. It would not be too much of an exaggeration to say that the weight loss has added quite a number of years to my life."

And finally, is George confident that he can maintain his weight loss? "Well, 78 years of age is unknown territory," he laughs, "but I can't see any reason not to continue with my new healthy lifestyle. It really has given me a new lease of life which I intend to enjoy for a long time to come."
